Social media is the new resumé.

Today, many industries call for personal brands to demonstrate expertise over paper documents. In food and wine, a rich online presence showcasing your knowledge and passion might do more than an impressive work history. Social media has removed the gatekeepers, and that opportunity is exciting.

But it’s also challenging. Not only does building a personal brand require technical and creative skills, but it also forces you to constantly look yourself in the mirror.

Today, on the $mart Women Invest podcast, we are joined by Amanda McCrossin, a sommelier & YouTube vlogger in Napa Valley. She currently works as a sommelier at PRESS restaurant and her experience using online platforms to advance through the food/wine world will help you take your personal brand to the next level.

Tune in to hear Amanda’s insights on wine, working in a male-dominated industry, and building a personal brand!

“The first thing I do when I walk in the door is drop my ego.” – Amanda McCrossin

Points to Keep In Mind

  • Income doesn’t affect your credit score but does affect your potential line of credit
  • Distractions compromise your creative juices
  • Frustrations are rooted in insecurity
  • Napa Valley wines are typically advertised as being very over-the-top juicy wines
  • It is important to pay a credit card in full every month
  • Have 3 months’ worth of savings all the time
  • Education and knowledge are the most important things you can have
    • Seek out opportunities where people pay you to soak up these things
  • When building a personal brand, be careful that what you are putting out there is actually you
  • It’s very easy to put a guard up and difficult to be yourself
  • Stop pretending to have the answers to questions you don’t know
  • Be open when trying new wines
  • Read Cork Dork by Bianca Bosker to hear a decoding story about wine
